Our
experienced in Geofarm.
Fourty nine
students were emerged from Bachelor of
Science in Agriculture (second year and third year) for our on the job
training specifically in a GeoFarm located in Brgy. Mangayao, Bayambang, Pangasinan.
Our Agriculture Department Chairman Mrs. Roxanne S. Posadas and Production
Manager Mrs. Balbina R. Gutierrez were
accompanied us to the farm through public utility jeep.
GEOFARM is
not just an algae culture or spirulina culture. It’s good to know that this is
also an organic farm that helps in reducing global warming in this world. As a matter of fact, It is the
first organic farming in the Philippines. In 1998 the idea of a family centered
farm project began. The integrated farm was started as a pilot project in March
1990.It was a Family project idea created by Guevara siblings. Mr. Edgard
Guevara was the Farm Manager of this GEOFARM. A variety of vegetables, salads, fruits,
flowers and medicinal plants now grow in a balanced ecological-organic
environment.
The Geo Farm
has three kinds of waste: Human, Animal and Vegetal waste.
All these
organic waste coming from the kitchen, shower, toilet and animals shelter flow
into the biogas digester’s mixing tank. Anaerobic fermentation takes place and
kills up to 90% of the pathogenic bacteria due to the absence of oxygen and
high temperature. The biogas (60% Methane, 40% Carbon dioxide) produced by methane
bacteria as their waste product, is used in the kitchen for cooking.
The solid and
liquid digested waste are separated by gravity in the oxidation or settling
pond. The liquid water overflows to the Water Cleansing Basin where impurities
and heavy metals pollutants are absorbed by the aquatic plants. This crystal
clear water still rich with nutrients supplies the water and fertilizes the
ponds which in turn provides feeds for the fishes.
Spirulina and Lemon grass are the two known products in this
GeoFarm. By the way, What is Spirulina? Some of us were first time to heard the word “Spirulina”. Spirulina or Anthrospira
for its scientific name is the oldest
living organism in the world. Around 3.5 billion years ago. It is also a
cyanobacteria that Human and animal can be consumed. It is also called
superfood for its many benefits for human
health. One gram of Spirulina is equal to one kilo of fresh fruits and
vegetables.15x more protein than soya beans.15x beta-carotene than carrots. 40x
more assimilable iron than spinach.4x more vitamin B12 than the liver. And it
is also rich vitamin A that prevents to
blindness. It is a type of blue-green algae that is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals
and carotenoids, antioxidants that can help protect cells from damage. It
contains nutrients, including B complex vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamin E,
manganese, zinc, copper, iron, selenium and
GLA (gamma linolenic acid) (an essential fatty acid).GLA stimulates
growth in some animals and makes skin and hair shiny and soft yet more durable.GLA
dissolves fats deposits, helping to prevent heart problems, lower blood
pressure and reducing bad cholesterol.GLA also acts as an anti-inflammatory, sometimes
alleviating symptoms of arthritic conditions. Among the advantages of spirulina
that mentioned. Here are the another super spirulina facts.
1. Spirulina
is high in chlorophyll and has avery high vegetable protein level, up to 65%
.It has been described as a complete food source and said to contain over 100
types of nutrient. The nutrients in spirulina are highly absorbable as it
contains no cellulose in its cell walls.
2. It is a
protein powerhouse as spirulina contains 18 of the 22 amino acids required by
the body incuding all 8 essential amino acids.
3. Great for
the blood. Since Spirulina has 40 times more assimilable iron. Then, it helps
alot in forming red blood cells and beneficial to pregnant women and people
with anemia.
4. Energy
boosting
5. Good
fats. Spirulina is a good source of Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s).Our body
needs to keep a healthy heart, nervous system and brain.
6. True
alkaline food source. Spirulina helps balance the body’s pH. When the body is
acidic it will pull alkaline minerals from the bones to keep the pH balanced.
7. Cleansing
properties. Spirulina can be used to detoxify the liver and kidneys, as well as
the arteries. It can help with weight loss as it contains high amounts of
phenylalanine (an amino acid which curbs appetite).
And the Top
fact is .NASA said that Astronauts were using spirulina and water as their food in space and they can
survive for a couples of month. We were also survive in just a couples of month
if we just eat spirulina and water.
SPIRULINA CULTURE
Everyone can
raise and culture spirulina in our home. It is easy to culture because blue
green algae doubles a day.
Just to
comply our materials in expert or trusted spirulina culture or farm more
importantly is getting a spirulina algae.
Proper shelter for the spirulina culture. If small
amount of spirulina is your starting in culturing spirulina, an aquarium is
enough for the main time. You may transfer it when spirulina multiples more.
Sodium
bicarbonate and rock salt as their foods,
human resources(workers)
and nature resources such as sunlight, water
should be
volcanic water, ocean water, rain water, air
etc.
Every day
around seven in the morning, we greeted and talked the spirulina because they
were also living organsims and this situation spirulina multiples more. We
observed every day that on top of the water in the pool floats a thick algae.
In this scenario, we should now harvest the spirulina. We used tabo to get the
algae that floats and put this in a plastic tray that clean clothe was above
and it serves as a strainer. After getting the algae and strained. We rinsed
the algae, three times with alkaline water, Then, we put it to the icing bottle
and we formed a rope liked in the stainless tray. Next is sundrying. Four in
the afternoon when we got the dried spirulina and and remove it to the tray and
we blended it to make it powderized. We weighed it minimum of harvested spirulina
weighs 300 grams that equals to one bottle of spirulina capsule. After weighing
we go to the laboratory and make a capsulizing in spirulinaWe used masks and
gloves. We capsulized with the used of our hands. After capsulizing, we put it
to the bottle.
After
harvesting an algae. We used kayak to form a wave in the pool because Spirulina
is originally lived in deep sea or ocean. After waving the water in the pool.
We fed rock salt and sodium bicarbonate
once a week.
